ENERGY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, RIO TINTO'S RICHARDS BAY MINERALS, SOUTH AFRICA

Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) contracted Ensight to undertake a Desktop Review of its energy expenditure to identify the potential for energy cost savings.  The Desktop Review lead to a long term 5-year Energy leadership Program to save $12 million per annum.

Two Energy leadership Programs were implemented concluding in 2019. Delivering over 13% energy cost savings in over 60 energy cost-saving projects.

The Programs of Projects from more efficient hydraulic mining with improved density control, specifically developed density transfer pumps, bag house filter motor control operations, air compressor operational improvements, and improved water recovery in the minerals separation plant to control of HVAC units in the administration offices.

$6 million in capital funding was secured from the Eskom’s demand management program to facilitate the management of the four furnaces, and co-ordination with the roaster, iron and slag plants.

ENERGY LEADERSHIP PROGRAM SITE WIDE ENERGY PROGRAM PALABORA COPPER, LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA

Palabora Copper (formerly the Palabora Mining Company – PMC) entered into a contract with Ensight (Australia) to undertake a Desktop Review of its energy expenditure to identify the potential for energy cost savings.

Two months previously the Palabora Copper board had requested the Managing Director provide a strategy to respond to the tripling of electricity costs, electricity costs per kWh rose from USD1.5 cents to USD5.5 cents during this period.

This had increased the operation’s energy costs by some US$40 million per annum. Ensight’s Energy Leadership Program delivered US$4 million per annum in cost savings per annum over a three year contract.

In addition, a $2 million in capital funding was secured from the Eskom’s demand management program to facilitate the management of the milling circuits, copper smelter  and copper refinery boilers and management of the tank house.

Where Our Work In It All Started

In 2018, Ensight began its journey with pioneering a sustainable energy and water solution for fast food restaurants. It all started with a Proof of Concept project at True Blue’s Springfield KFC Restaurant in Durban, South Africa. Ensight invested over $200,000 over a period of 24 months to develop a whole of restaurant energy and water savings solutionThrough this long term Proof of Concept project developed a deep understanding of the operation of fast food operations, particularly, KFCs. The project delivered 26% cost savings. In 2022 we increased the energy savings to 45% at Sherwood KFC.

Smartvalve Water Consumption Impact

Water is life, and just like energy, water can be used wastefully and metering and billing errors can occur.

Ensightt has tested the use of SmartValves as part of a water cost saving initiative at KFCs in South Africa. Using the principles of the Energy Valuation Organisation’s International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol, the Smartvalve resulted in a 35% water cost reduction. This amounts to an average saving of about US$200 per month.

The water cost savings occur as the air that is entrained in water and is released at atmospheric pressure is kept in the water until after passing the water meter. The Smartvalve uses a technique called laminar flow to keep the air entrained in the water flow. Providing water cost savings for clients.

Efficiency at Wheatstone Construction Village

Chevron’s Wheatstone Construction Village which consists of 3,800 accommodation units, 60 laundries and a 1,500 seat central dining and kitchen area.

Ensight developed the Energy Cost Saving Plan for the Chevron Wheatstone Construction Village in Western Australia. The additional capital investment in energy efficiency saved $19.7M over 5 years for Wheatstone Construction Village. From smart HVAC room controllers, use of super-efficient dishwashers, combi-steamers, lighting and kitchen extraction in the central kitchen, and efficient guest laundries.
